ESSEX ~1.5 years old. Good with dogs. Kids and cats TBD. Needs a companion animal and fenced yard.

GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.

Sweet young boy found wandering the streets, that is certainly no place for any dog, and certainly not Essex. He came into GSRA as a blank slate with the exception of already being housebroken & crate trained. That was a nice surprise, but also saddens us to know someone took the time to care enough about themselves, but not enough about Essex to teach him how to behave in a home. He has been a quick study with my GSRA alumni leading the way in teaching him how to interact with other dogs, his approach was a bit too excited, and he's learning a more slow, careful approach is better. He's learned sit, down, place, and importantly, OFF, from those kitchen counters and high furniture. He didn't know how to relax on a dog bed with family & watch the evening news. He was more interested in getting the story for himself by excitedly roaming the house; nah, that's how you get into trouble. He still needs practice in knowing how to act in the house and to just stay on his "place" to learn how to relax.

Outside he is delighted to have a ball to chase or herd, see the video below; this is primal GSD coming out by herding that ball. None of that had to be taught, we're simply encouraging him to "bring" the smaller balls back to be thrown again. He will need a fenced yard to keep him safe & to enjoy this natural herding instinct. Leash walking is another area he's learning for the first time. He's a puller, so we are using a prong collar to assist with proper leash behavior. We've worked within the confines of our fence to teach, 'heel,' he's getting it and it's still a work in progress.

Essex is in impressionable young dog who needs leadership from his humans. He's a good dog now, but I want an adopter who is committed to molding him in to a great dog. He's fantastic in the car and would enjoy all aspects of being an included family member in as many activities as you'll teach him how to participate in.
