RAY ~ 6 years old. Good with dogs. Not good with kids or cats.

GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.

Big, sweet Ray...but to look at him, he's got the looks of a tough guy. He's currently 95 lbs. of Beef Cake! Ray was an unhealthy weight when he came in to GSRA due to having an undiagnosed underactive thyroid. He received the lab work and veterinary care to be diagnosed and prescribed daily thyroid replacement medication.. That thyroid is easily treated with a pill to replace the thyroid hormone twice daily, and I serve it as a garnish on his kibble. Lab testing to monitor its effectiveness is needed every 6 months, and the medication costs about $20/month. It’s a common condition in shepherds and is easily remedied.

Ray also had a terrible allergy when he came into GSRA. He was itchy, flaky, and scratched all the time. That is now successfully managed with a fish based kibble and a daily Zyrtec. His fur is now soft & shiny, he has no dandruff, and is way more comfortable. Likely, he is allergic to beef or chicken and those ingredients are eliminated from his diet; even in his treats. I feed him Fromm Whitefish & Potato kibble, 1.5 cups, twice daily. A bag runs around $65 and will last a month.

Ray is crate trained and fantastic in the house. He's trustworthy to have free roam in the house, but I would not advise this immediately as a new adopter. There will be an adjustment period and needed time for Ray to feel safe in your home, too. If there are other dogs in the house, taking things slow to introduce them will be your best approach. I achieved this over time with the use of crates & gates and monitored interactions with my own dogs before full privileges of the house. Now his days are spent rotating from bed to bed and watching over the estate for squirrels and the neighbor’s Amazon deliveries.

Ray enjoys walks in the neighborhood and investigating with his nose. He is not a fan of small dogs or cats, fortunately, we do not encounter many on our walks, but we'll turn the other direction if they're spotted.

He is a calm riding in the car. He is a fantastic gardening companion. He's a sleepy head in the morning and likes to lounge a while before taking on the day.

Ray would be suited for any owner, novice or experienced, who is willing to take direction on what we have already learned. He is now enjoying the good life, and we're not going backwards. He is slow to open up his affections, he needs to know he can trust, but once he does, you'll get to know the sweet, clownish, protective, alert boy I have the privilege of fostering.
