Zade was rescued at around a year old from a family who neglected and abused him, and we got him at 1.5 years old. He’s now about 3.5 almost 4 years old. He’s great with people, kids, great with the baby (likes to lick him on the head) great with our other dog, but is difficult with dogs he doesn’t know, such as freaking out when he sees dogs out in their yards during a walk. It took some time for him to get adjusted to our other dog but they are best friends now, and the foster people before us had another dog, so he can be integrated with other dogs. Our main problems with him are just high anxiety and separation anxiety. He does fine with us leaving the house but it’s more if he can see us but can’t be in the same room. He’s also peed in the house a lot but that’s mostly stopped once I blocked off the spot, so I think he was marking. He’s been fixed but I think it was just done too late to curve some of that testosterone. He’s great with the baby but with his anxiety and high energy, I’m just worried that he will unintentionally hurt him when he’s freaking out or being rough near him. I think with some work and time, and chances to get his energy out, he could be a great dog. I just don’t have the time to take him and the stroller (because he’s so difficult on walks) or train him at all anymore. He’s on trazodone right now to help with the anxiety, but it hasn’t made too much of a difference. Most of the time he ends up crated up a lot of the day, because he will bark loudly at passing cars and wake the baby up from naps if not.
A few good things about Zade: he’s fine with being pulled on, so I believe he would be great with children and older toddlers. Now that he’s used to our other dog he’s great with her too. They love to play fight and he rolls over and lets her jump on him, even though she is smaller. He is crate trained and very easily goes into his crate when told. I believe with the time taken to train him and work him, he would be a fantastic dog.
