GRIFFIN ~4 years old. Good with dogs and cats. Kids TBD. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Get a load of this Fantastic Beast! Griffin is a gorgeous black and tan male with some copper in his coat. He is a little on the smaller side and will probably top out at 65 lbs. Griff had been neglected by a previous owner and was in really rough shape before GSRA stepped in and brought him into our rescue. He was starving for both food and love! GSRA quickly realized that Griffin was suffering from a chronic condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI for short). This is an easy to manage lifelong condition. Potential adopters will need to be willing and prepared to do an extra 10-15 minutes of meal prep at every meal and mix some enzymes into Griffin's food to enable him to digest it. The enzymes are easily obtained through a vet's office. That's all the extra work required. The hardest part is looking at Griff's face when you tell him he has to wait for his food to be ready! Griffin's previous owner did not invest in socializing or training him, so in some ways Griff is a big puppy. Since being with his foster he has been housebroken and crate trained. Griff has a preferred schedule for potty breaks but will normally vocalize when he needs to go outside. Griff likes his crate and considers it his safe space. He will go in when instructed but will also hang out there of his own accord at times. In classic velcro dog fashion, Griffin prefers to be by your side at all times and will actively seek affection. If he can't be right where you are, then he's most likely chilling out in his crate. Griffin needs some leash work, but his pulling is from excitement at being outside. Griff will allow you to steer and lead him on walks or hikes via his leash and harness. He knows both sit and down, but sometimes has problems focusing. A basic obedience course will do wonders for this handsome guy. Griffin is a talker! He gets excited when he realizes that he is going on a walk or car ride and becomes quite the Chatty Cathy, not unlike a Husky. He will chat up everyone he meets, both human and canine, but it's only because he's excited to meet new friends. Griff will also ask you "Are we there yet?" when riding in the car. He is being fostered with an older GSD and a cat, so kitties are ok for his forever home. When it comes to other dogs, Griff appears to be ok with those his size or bigger. He has not been tested with small dogs or children, so those remain TBD. Griffin does not require a companion animal and would be ok as an only dog, but a canine sibling that he can learn the ropes from could also be beneficial. He does need to be in a forever home where someone is home more often than not. Griffin has a little bit of separation anxiety, so a stay at home parent, someone who works from home on a regular basis, or a retiree would be ideal owner scenarios for this boy. A fenced yard is a must for Griff. He is currently crated when his foster dad has to leave the house, but they are starting to work on free rein privileges now that potty training skills seem to be solid. Griffin needs to gain some weight before he can be neutered and get additional required vetting before he can be placed on trial, so any potential adopters will need to be patient while he actively works on transfiguring himself into the healthy and magnificent creature that he was meant to be.
