My name is Lucy and I'm about 6 years old. I had been patiently waiting at the Wake Co. SPCA since about mid Sept. (they were very nice by the way) when this very nice lady from the German Shepherd Rescue (who knew they existed?) came and got me on Oct 3rd and took me home. I was very nervous at first. Particularly with her slippery wood floors. But she put a few rugs down for me so I didn't feel like I was ice skating and gave me a super comfortable bed to sleep on. Plus, her bedroom is carpeted so if I was invited I could go in and hang out in there with her. I love to do this because that's where Max the cat hangs out too. I LOVE HIM!! He's the prettiest cat (I mean most handsome) I've ever seen and when he lets me I get close to him now and lick his face - I'm not sure if he likes it or not but I don't care because I think he's DREAMY!!!

Well, not too long after I was at her house, this other really really nice lady with red hair from the rescue came and said I was beautiful (even with my notched ear) and super sweet. She even made me a "cover girl" on the GSD information pamplet. (I'm the one next to the small American flag posing on a front porch - I've been told I look very noble and patriotic). The only bad thing was when this nice lady from the rescue started rubbing my tummy (which I loved) she noticed some bumps/lumps. I was thinking "What's the big deal, they don't bother me none!" but she said we needed to get me to the doctor right away to have them checked out.
A few days later this very nice man in a white coat (they called him a vet) rubbed my belly (I could get used to this) and he said that the lumps should come off and be tested because..........I could have breast cancer!!!.........I'm thinking WHAT? I didn't think dogs could get breast cancer. Oh brother! My foster mom, the vet and the other nice lady from GSD were a little worried. After the nice red headed lady talked to other vets and people at the Rescue, it was decided that the nice vet would take chest xrays (I had to get in some funny positions for those) to see if the cancer (if I had it) had spread. Well, the vet said my lungs looked great and that the next step was to remove the tumors (another word for bumps) and test them. Now, that's something I really don't want to do again but I guess it was necessary.
Everyone said I did great through the surgery on Nov and was a very good girl. My foster mom said I was acting soooooo funny afterwards because of some "happy drugs" they gave me and was laughing but then she stopped (thank God) because I was really uncomfortable for about 24 hrs (those staple thingies were yucky and I didn't want to lie down because it hurt to stretch - ouchy!!)......Well, I kept taking some medicine to help with the hurting and it did and after a few days I was almost back to my normal self except no bumps!!
Here's the best news of all (which I don't fully understand because I'm just a dog).....the bumps were benign which means I didn't have the bad stuff!!! Yippeee!! The vet said he was happy, the red headed lady said she was happy but most importantly, my foster mom was happy and guess what........I WAS ONE HAPPY DOG!
One more thing, my foster mom and I developed a huge bond after going through this together and we decided that I would stay with her FOREVER!! I am so excited and my foster mom......ooops I mean my real mom now (it became official on Dec 9th).....says that this will be a GREAT CHRISTMAS!!
I just want everyone to know that I'm doing well and if it hadn't been for the Rescue, I still might be walking around with bumps and in a place where they might not take time and effort to make me as healthy as I could be.
I want to give special thanks to God, the red-headed lady from the rescue, my mom, Zeke Kennedy's mom (her name is Wendy and I was told she gave a very generous donation to my surgery), and EVERYONE associated with the Rescue who contributed, prayed, and sent well-wishes my way. I LOVE THE GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE AND I OWE YOU MY NEW LIFE!!! Hope to see you all soon!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Love, Lucy
